A distanza di tre anni dal formidabile MCD "Slightly Damaged", ecco il ritorno gli americani Borgo Pass. Autori di uno sludge sudato e potente, questo quintetto di New York si è distinto nel corso degli anni per una produzione musicale di indubbia qualità. Consiglio al lettore di dare un'occhiata alla recensione di "Slightly Damaged", presente negli archivi di Shapeless. Al suo interno è possibile trovare, infatti, un'ampia biografia della band. In questa sede, basti sapere che i Borgo Pass hanno calcato i palchi di mezza America, raccogliendo consensi un po' ovunque e condividendo il palco con band di altissimo livello. La formazione, consolidata e con anni di gavetta alle spalle, vede sempre James Tamarazzo alla voce, Tom Crane e Paul Rosado alle chitarre, YT al basso e Joe Wood alla batteria.
Registrato agli studi The Croop di Freeport, NY, sotto la supervisione di Chris Laybourne, "Nervosa" è il nuovo album dei Borgo Pass. La copertina è, come al solito, diversa da ciò che ci si potrebbe aspettare da un gruppo sludge. E' rappresentato un cimitero gotico, dove un individuo in tunica nera, passeggiando tra le tombe, sorregge il corpo privo di sensi di una bella ragazza. Il volto di questa persona è sfocato, mosso. Insomma, un artwork curioso che poco ha a che fare con quello che decora il retro della copertina, ovvero elicotteri, una targhetta militare e degli uomini in trincea (richiamo alla guerra del Vietnam, alla base del testo della canzone "American Horror Story"). Il libretto contiene testi, fotografie e ringraziamenti. Tra le note, spicca il ricordo di "Dimebag" Darrel, in passato grande amico ed estimatore del gruppo. Un'altra nota consiglia di "ascoltare questo lavoro ad un volume follemente alto". Come non dar retta a questo consiglio, eheh? Io l'ho fatto e direi che ne è valsa la pena! Innanzitutto perché la qualità di registrazione è perfetta, ed in secondo luogo perché la musica dei Borgo Pass spacca! Sì, cari lettori, se già "Slightly Damaged" mi aveva convinto, con "Nervosa" i Borgo Pass dimostrano di essere una band veramente cazzuta! Il CD si apre con una doppietta da cardiopalma: "Wrong Man" e la title-track. Sin dal primo riff, si capisce che anche questa volta i nuovayorkesi non hanno tradito i propri numi tutelari: Down, Corrosion Of Conformity e Crowbar. Le influenze stoner si sono diradate, per lasciar spazio solo ai riff pesantissimi e precisi, alla struttura asciutta delle canzoni, alla ritmica cadenzata e potente. Tra le due canzoni, "Nervosa" è la migliore e ritengo sia giustificata la sua scelta come title-track. I riff sono d'autore ed il brano è sanguigno e vibrante come non mai. Ma anche "Wrong Man" è una composizione di alto livello. In ambedue i casi, le chitarre fanno la parte del leone con un suono ribassato, fangoso e torrido, che trasuda puro orgoglio sudista! La sezione ritmica è implacabile e non sbaglia un colpo. In più, le vocals di James si sono fatte ancora più arrabbiate e grintose. Insomma, il motore dei Borgo Pass funziona a pieni giri!
"Dead Summer" è un brano più riflessivo, dove il suono pare addolcirsi un minimo. In realtà, il gruppo ritorna a picchiare, sebbene la ritmica sia meno spedita che in precedenza, e la violenza si alterni con parti più riflessive. Tra l'altro, vale la pena di segnalare i buoni assoli dei chitarristi, che impreziosiscono ogni composizione.
I nervi tornano a farsi scoperti con la successiva "Follow Me To Nowhere", che sembra un brano dei Mule addizionato con dinamite, prima di tranquillizzarsi nuovamente con la semi-ballad "Last To Know". In questi frangenti, il cantante si dimostra molto espressivo e parla direttamente al cuore degli ascoltatori.
Puro sludge sporco con l'ottima "Acedown", una delle tracce più trascinanti dell'album. Alla sua pesantezza si contrappone l'agilità della "Warchild", la canzone più influenzata da Pepper Keenan e soci. Anche il cantato è meno incazzato.
Altra coppia di canzoni di valore sono le successive "Rid Myself Of You" e "14 Days That Killed Me Slow": più introspettiva la prima, più "straight-in-your-face" la seconda. Ambedue ottimi brani.
Dopo la breve acustica "Bad Mother Ocean", il CD trova la sua conclusione nella strana "American Horror Story". Si tratta del brano più pesante in assoluto, comparabile agli episodi più soffocanti dei Crowbar, lontana anni luce dal tipico stile Borgo Pass. L'arrangiamento è arricchito dalla tromba di Chris Laybourne.
"Nervosa" è un album fresco, pieno di grinta e che si fa apprezzare anche dopo ripetuti ascolti. Il gruppo non è particolarmente originale, ma sa come si suona lo sludge e ne rispetta i canoni con fedeltà. In più, ha dalla sua un songwriting invidiabile! Mi chiedo come un gruppo tanto bravo possa essere ancora senza contratto! E' una vera ingiustizia, visto quello che ci propongono i grandi distributori! Penso che il gruppo di New York sia conscio di questa sua situazione paradossale, vista la malinconia dei testi. I fan li adorano, i grandi gruppi li rispettano, ma loro sono ancora lì a fare gavetta. La vita è un cattivo scherzo. I Borgo Pass sanno che per sopravvivere, bisogna lottare. Lo stanno facendo con tutte le loro forze! Grandissimi!

It is discussed some piece more weighing in absolute, comparable to the episodes more suffocating some Crowbar, distant years light from the typical style Borgo Pass. The arrangiamento is enriched from the trumpet of Chris It. "Nervous" it is a fresh album, full of grim expression and that it is done to appreciate also after repeated listening. The group is not specially original, but knows how it is played the sludge and respects of it the rents with faithfulness. In more, it has from its an enviable songwriting! I wonder like a very capable group is able to be still without contract! It is a true unjustice, seen what us propongono the large distributors! I think that the group of New York is conscious of this its paradoxical situation, seen the melancholy of the texts. The fan adore them, the large groups respect them, but they are still there to do gavetta. The life is a bad joke. The Borgo Pass know that to survive, is necessary to fight.
